Chinese Placement Test Information
The Chinese placement test is required for all first-year students and all transfer students who have either studied Chinese before or have prior exposure to Mandarin Chinese at home, and plan to fulfill a language requirement and/or would like to continue their study of Chinese. This rule applies to all students in all schools and programs, including graduate school and professional schools. Students must take the online placement test and the placement/validation exam before registering for courses.
The online placement test is NOT required if:
- You have no previous knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. To start your Chinese studies at Northwestern, register for Chinese 111-1.
- You attended high school where the primary language of instruction was Mandarin Chinese. Some international students from China, Singapore and Taiwan fall into this category. Such students should petition for a review of their educational records at WCAS Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising (OUSA). The petition form is available at http://www.weinberg.northwestern.edu/handbook/doucments/FL_validation_form.pdf
Description of Chinese Language Placement Test
The Chinese online placement test consists of four sections covering:
- vocabulary and sentence structures,
- reading comprehension.
Chinese placement/validation test consists of an essay and an oral interview. This test serves two purposes: (1) for more accurate placements of students by quarter of a language level, and (2) for validation of language requirement fulfillment.
How to take the test:
Students must complete both the online placement test and the placement/validation test before their final placement results are posted.

Placement results can be assessed at the same site.
Results: After finishing the online placement test between June 15 and two days before the placement/validation test in the Wildcat Welcome Week, usually on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, students will get tentative placement results along with instruction on the schedule for the placement/validation test. Check the placement test results site during or before Wildcat Welcome to consult your results.
Special note to new students:
All new students should take the online placement test before July 31st. If you cannot do so for legitimate reasons, please take it as soon as possible. After taking the online placement test, within five business days, you should check the same URL as above for further instruction on the placement/validation test schedule. If you take the test between August 1st and the Wildcat Welcome week, further instruction will be posted within five business days as well. If you take the online placement test after the Wildcat Welcome week and before the first day of the fall quarter, instruction should be available in two business days.
