Spanish Placement Information 2008-2009

The Spanish placement test is offered online over the summer (starting July 15, 2008).

Please note:
If you take the placement test before September 1st, your results will be posted online at http://placement-test.mmlc.northwestern.edu/results/ on September 1st.

If you take the placement test between September 1st and September 15th, your results will be posted online at the same URL before New Student Week begins.

If you take the placement test after September 15th, your results will be posted online at the same URL as above within 48-72 hours after you have completed the exam.

Reassessment
If you score high enough on the online portion, you will be notified that “Reassessment” (oral interview and written composition) will be required to confirm your level of proficiency.  This follow-up exam, offered Wednesday September 17, 2008 and Monday, September 22, 2008, will determine whether you have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement and/or qualify for Spanish 199-0 or 200-level Spanish courses.

Before registering for Spanish courses at Northwestern, you MUST take the online Spanish placement test unless any of the following applies to you:

Your AP exam score in Spanish language OR literature is a 5.
You have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement in Spanish. We encourage you to continue your Spanish studies at Northwestern. Please register for SPANISH 202-0 (Current Topics in Conversation) or 203-0 (Individual & Society through Written Expression) or email Heather Colburn at h-colburn@northwestern.edu, if you have questions regarding AP 5 placement.

Your AP exam score in Spanish language AND literature is a 5.  You have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement in Spanish.  We encourage you to continue your Spanish studies at Northwestern.  Please register for Spanish 210, 211 or 220.  If you have questions, please email Heather Colburn (h-colburn@northwestern.edu).

Your AP exam score in Spanish is a 4.
You have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement in Spanish. To continue your Spanish studies at Northwestern, you'll need to register for SPANISH 199-0 (Language in Context: Contemporary Spain). First-year students are advised to take this course in fall quarter. If you have any questions, please email Elena Lanza (e-lanza@northwestern.edu).

Your AP exam score in Spanish is a 3.
You will satisfy the Weinberg foreign language requirement in Spanish by taking Accelerated Intermediate Spanish (SPANISH 125-0). This course is offered only in Fall Quarter. If you have any questions, please email Francisco Castro (fca958@northwestern.edu)

You took high school Spanish for one year or less.
To continue your Spanish studies at Northwestern, register for SPANISH 101-1, offered only in fall quarter. If you have any questions, please email Sue Pechter (s-pechter@northwestern.edu).

All transfer students who plan to take Spanish MUST take the online placement test before registering for courses.

The Spanish placement test is given online only. You should take the test before coming to campus in the fall.  If you don’t have access to the internet, you may take the placement test on a computer in your student residence or in a computer lab as soon as you arrive on campus.

There are many advantages to taking the online test as early as possible in the summer:

You'll get your score in time to learn about the course in which you'll begin.
You can take the test when you feel ready.
You can take the time you need to complete the test.
You can work in a quiet, relaxed testing environment.

The Spanish Placement Test will be available online during the week of add/drop and the week of pre-registration.

Reassessment of the placement test will be held by appointment only, during the week of add/drop and the week of pre-registration.
