Mac OS 9 language support installation

Tools needed:
Mac OS 9 System Installation Disk
Supported web browser, i.e. Internet Explorer

Overview:
The Mac OS 9 system disk comes with a number of optional language packages, sometimes called "language kits" that, once installed, allow you to both read and type text in a particular language. For example, installing Chinese language support on your Macintosh allow you to browse Chinese-language web pages and, via a specific keyboard setting, type Chinese documents.

Although an installed language kit can be used to both read and write documents in a particular language, the most important function used by the placement test is the former because you will not be required type in a non-roman script on the placement tests.

The only tasks required to prepare your computer for the placement test, then, is to install the language kit(s) you will need, and any web browsers recommended by the matrix of supported configurations.

Finding the Mac OS 9 language kits:
Begin by locating the most recent Mac OS 9 system disk that was used to install the Mac OS on your computer. If the Mac OS was pre-installed on your computer, locate the System Install disk that was also packaged with your computer.

Place the disk in your CD-ROM drive. And locate the "Software Installers" folder, you might have to scroll down from the view pictured in Figure 1, or change the view to "list view" as depicted in Figure 2. You are looking for the "Install language kits" program; the icon is shown in Figure 3.

Install the language kit you need:
From the list of available language kits (Figure 4), mark the checkboxes of the languages you will need and click the "Install" button. The installation process is similar to other system installations. You will be required to restart the computer before you can begin using the features of the language kit. After the language kit is installed, visit the online text samples to be sure that you will be able to display text in the language.

If it doesn't "just work":
The procedure outlined here should typically work for test takers using the software indicated in the supported configurations matrix. If you are experiencing difficulties installing the language kit software, or are still not able to see the language in the supported web browser after the language kit is installed, please address e-mail the technical support address, providing as much information as you can:
