Mac OS X language support installation

Tools needed:
Mac OS X System Installation Disks
Supported web browser, i.e. Internet Explorer

Overview:
For over a year, most Macintosh computers have come with Mac OS X pre-installed on the hard drive, usually as the suggested first-choice operating system. Fortunately, these pre-installed versions of Mac OS X already include the support necessary to view many non-romanized language scripts such as Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. In the same way, most customer-installed or customized installations of Mac OS X version 10.2 ("Jaguar") will include the same support. Chances are, if you are using the software suggested in the supported software matrix, the text samples will show up correctly on the first try.

If the text sample does not show up correctly, it is possible, that the necessary fonts were never installed. This could be because the Mac OS X installation was customized to not include the fonts, or did not finish installing. The fonts can be installed from "Disc 2" of the Mac OS X installation disk set, by installing one or both of two packages called "AdditionalFonts.pkg" and "AdditionalAsianFonts.pkg"

Finding the missing fonts:
Begin by locating the most recent set of Mac OS X installation CD-ROMs, in closest correspondence to the version of mac OS X that is currently running on your computer. Load "Disc 2" into your computer. When the CD-ROM loads, it should open up a window in the Finder with a number of "package" icons (Figure 1).

Figure 1. Typical contents of "Disc 2" of the Jaguar installation CDs.

Double-clicking any of the ".pkg" files will open the Mac OS X installation program and allow you to install the package. Select the package(s) that you need. If in doubt, install both.

AdditionalAsianFonts.pkg: support for East Asian scripts, i.e. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.
AddtionalFonts.pkg: support for Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, etc.

Installing a package file:
The Mac OS X installation program functions like most other software installers. Because the installation of these fonts affect the whole computer, you will need to first authorize the installation as an "Admin" of the computer. (Figure 2).

Figure 2. The installer program will request an admin's name and password.

Following the authentication, proceed by selecting your startup drive, and installing. No customization is necessary. After a succesful installation (Figure 3), you can close the installer. Although the installation program does not suggest that you restart your computer, it is a still a good idea to restart your computer.

If it doesn't "just work":
The procedure outlined here should typically work for test takers using the software indicated in the supported configurations matrix. If you are experiencing difficulties installing the language kit software, or are still not able to see the language in the supported web browser after the language kit is installed, please address e-mail the technical support address, providing as much information as you can:
