Language Placement

Fulfilling the Language Requirement

To fulfill the Weinberg Language Requirement in Italian or study Italian for the first time, please follow the instructions below.

If you have never studied Italian, simply register for Italian 101-1 (Elementary Italian) or Italian 133/134-1 (Intensive Italian).

If you have any prior knowledge of Italian, take the placement test by July 31st, 2024. No preparation required.

If you have an AP Italian exam score, click on the following link: https://lrc.northwestern.edu/language-learning/advanced-placement-credit.html to determine the credits and contact Daniela Pozzi Pavan to identify the most appropriate course based on your proficiency and department offer.

If you are a transfer student, finalize your placement results before your registration time. As soon as you have taken the online test, contact Daniela Pozzi Pavan and she will instruct you about the next step.

Proficiency Validation for first year students

An oral interview will complete and validate the online placement test. Interviews will take place on Zoom during the first week of September. An email with the date and time of your interview will be sent at the end of August / beginning of September.
